Hastwell & Lightfoot [McLaren Vale SA], Tempranillo 2017

Owner / Vigneron Martin Lightfoot of Hastwell & Lightfoot Winery has been broadening his varietal plantings to include  other alternative deserving and long-overdue Mediterranean grapes.
The Tempranillo variety, arguably, should have been the defining and quintessential red grape of Australia rather than the more accepted Shiraz, as it seems to thrive under the panoplia of Australian agricultural conditions
Tempranillo traditionally lends itself to blending but in this instance delivers admirably as a stand-alone drop
This 2017 Hastwell & Lightfoot Tempranillo from McLaren Vale, shows as deep mulberry both on the eye and initial nose.
Anchored in the ripe cherry / plum and mixed spices spectrum both on the nose and palate, the earthy fruit primacy is well-supported by the deft use of smoky oak tannins
It delivers abundantly and fulsomely at present but will enjoy some bottle development.
A good match for hearty charcuterie and cheeses as well as other Mediterranean protein dishes
