Hastwell & Lightfoot [McLaren Vale SA], Fiano 2019
The Hastwell & Lightfoot team has released a duo of vibrant Italian varietal whites under their "Mediterranean Collection".
The minimalist yet stand-outish labels of both the Fiano and Vermentino [more about this one in a separate review] as well as the golden glow of the liquid within the clear bottle, immediately attract the eye and raise tastebuds expectations.
This Fiano, a variety traditionally associated with the regions of Southern Italy, anecdotally from the small area of Lapio, has found solidly expressive footings in the McLaren Vale area since the early 2000's.
The variety's flavour profile morphs into aromas in the pear / citrus / honey spectrum, subtly accentuated by a spicy and nutty subtext.
A textural and teasing backpalate of juicy savouriness leads to a slippery [12.5% Alc] moreish long finish.
As with most Italian varieties, this Hastwell & Lightfoot 2019 Fiano is an ideal food wine [Think grilled barramundi & unencumbered grilled chicked salads].
I enjoyed mine both as an aperitif and with a umami-influenced mixed mushrooms stirfry.
With only 140 cases produced, it would be well worthwhile to lock in orders soonish, either directly [08 83230010] or through David Cummins of Define Wine [0414 736 342]
